Chinese Peculiar Tastes - Bean Ice-cream

bean ice-cream
In China you can find a bunch of snacks and sweets which would be considered by average Westerner as… well let’s call that unusual. That’s the story about one of them. Check how bean ice-cream taste.

Summer. Scorching heat. You’re melting. To prevent yourself from heat stroke, you reach closest convenience store and reach for its fridge. Ice-cream! Quickly! What to choose? You reach for any random one.  You have no idea what’s written on the wrapping but since there’s a picture of green ice-cream you assume it has to be apple taste (that’s what green colour usually means when it comes to sweets in Europe). Apple sounds fine. You buy it, open and try…

Well that’s definitely not apple. When you have a closer look at the wrapping you realize what that is. BEAN! That’s something new. Although considering how Chinese people put sweet bean into any kind of sweets (from buns to milk tea) maybe bean ice-cream shouldn’t have come with such a shock if you’ve put some consideration into it.

So how is it?
Not as bad as you might think. Not my favorite either. Tastes just like sweet bean (nothing revolutionary can be said on this point). There’s also this peculiar floury texture to it. In general – odd. If you’re looking for some new unusual taste – you can try. It’s very cheap (usually 1-2 RMB). If you just want some refreshment in a hot day, I’d say go for melon one.
