Visiting Chinese doctor is a very unusual experience (on many different levels). The same goes for the medicines. Guess how many pills you might be asked to take at one time. You’ll be surprised.
Being the only foreign teacher at the school means that you’re irreplaceable. As a consequence your getting sick creates quite a commotion at your work place. It’s understandable that your employer would like to do everything possible, for you to get better as soon as possible (to the point that it becomes ridiculous at times). So when you call saying that you have to cancel your classes because you’re sick, someone from the school appears immediately to take you to the doctor. After one hour spent in a hospital (with chest x-ray and blood testes taken) you can finally bring your miserable self back home. At this point you want nothing more than to finally go to sleep.
Next morning you’re being woken up by a phone call:
- “Hi Aga. Are you better now? Can you come to school today?”
You’re speechless. Are they seriously expect you to get over 39 degrees fever along with horrible sore throat, cough and waterfalls pouring from your nose (euphemistically referred to as ‘catarrh’) over one night?! You’re too tired and sick to get into discussion so you just answer – “No”. Apparently that wasn’t the right answer. You’ve been informed that the medicine you’ve got yesterday must not be good since you aren’t better. In that case someone from school will take you to a different doctor at the private clinic... There’s no winning with them. You just surrender.
Visit at the clinic wasn’t anything special but the medicines... You’ve been given medicines divided on 6 single doses (each one wrapped in a small paper package). Each of those doses consisted of... a dozen different pills! Literally 12! You’ve never got so many drugs at one time in your entire life. Did they work? Hell yea! You have no idea what kind of crazy drugs they were but the truth is that the next day you felt like a new born (or something close to). Apparently there still are some wonders in this world that can surprise you.
