Swallow Stew

swallow stew
Chinese cuisine is known for innumerable unusual sources of protein. No matter how many years you’ve spend here, there  will always be something that can surprise you. Recent example – swallow stew.

Your Chinese friend has invited you for dinner. She put on the table usual set of stir-fried dishes along with rise. Last thing that came to the table was a bowl with something like a stew. It smelled quite tasty. You were just about to take whole spoon of it when you’ve spotted little birds heads poking from the sauce. That kind of extinguished your enthusiasm for the dinner.
- What kind of dish is that exactly? – You ask suspiciously.
- Swallow stew. It’s very healthy (so what she said).

Not really sure how answer to that unexpected statement you ask another question instead:
- Where did you get those birds from?
- Oh. My father has a barn. He caught them with a net.

You don’t want to appear to be ungrateful so you have no choice but to try this odd dish. You stare at the stew... and it’s staring back. You have to admit it’s quite disheartening. Courage! You brace yourself and try...

How was it? Not that bad (at least if it comes to the taste). But frankly speaking there’s not much to eat in (except maybe for the sauce itself). Swallows are so small that whole dish looked practically as if it consisted of just bones. It’s hard to find even tine bit of meat on them. In general it’s not something worth getting for dinner. You’ll end up hungry and frustrated afterwards (no matter how healthy the stew is claimed to be).
