Check why people will stare at you if you appear on Chinese beach in bikini. Why it’s better to buy swimsuit abroad and what Chinese people do at the seaside.
Temperatures exceeded 30oC long ago. You’re melting. Each day your desire to go to the beach becomes stronger and stronger. You even began to dream about it. So when one of your colleagues comes to tell you that you’ll have 2-days school trip to the seaside in Fujian province, you can’t help but get excited. You start packing. What is the most important thing you should take? Undeniably swimsuit. When you talk about beach - bikini is the thing that comes to your mind. OK. All clear, time to depart for the new adventure.
After 5 hours in the bus your group finally reached the goal. BEACH! All of you go to the changing room. Having got yourself ready, you happily run outside. Not paying attention to anyone or anything you sprint straight into water. After swimming for a while and having calm down a little you finally spot some oddity in the behavior of other people:
1. They’re staring at you.
2. Apart from you and three guys no one is swimming.
What the hell?!

1. You haven’t realized it at first but your attire definitely differs from the rest of the women here. After careful observation you conclude that you’re actually THE ONLY person on the beach wearing bikini. Women here wear more conservative clothing. Their swimsuits resemble the ones from 50’s. They cover belly and usually have something like a skirt attached to them. In supermarkets those are basically the only models you can buy. What’s more problematic – they’re usually too small for Westerners.
2. You’ve forgotten about one simple fact. Most Chinese people can not swim. That became to change nowadays, and new generation (elementary school kids) usually already acquired this skill. If it comes to their parents however, most of them don’t even want to get close to water. Why in the world they’re going to the beach then? In most cases, to dress in pretty clothes (or mentioned ‘swimdress’) and take some photos. The more courageous ones can even get in water (up to knee depth, no more) to play with waves and, of course , take photos while they’re doing so.
To give justice to Chinese people I have to mention that situation in big (more westernized) cites, resorts and on the beaches where you can meet many foreigners is slightly different and looks pretty much like anywhere else in the world. Well in any case China is not a place you go because of its beaches. So if you happen to visit one of those places and end up in similar situation just treat it with humor.
