Text about different country would be incomplete without mentioning its local food. As for Malaysian cuisine its sweets would make particularly interesting chapter. Check what you should definitely try while in the country.

Most Malaysian sweets are fried or made of glutinous rice. They come in a myriad of shapes and colours. While they all look fascinating, the taste of most of them is actually quite plain. There are however two snacks that definitely stand out in the crowd:

1. Apam Balik – peanut pancakes. It’s kind of a street food. You won’t find it in any restaurant in Malaysia. You can buy them however on any night market for as cheap as 0.5 MYR. They are very sweet and satiating. Filling, made of peanuts and honey, gives them strong and distinctive taste.

2. Ondeh Ondeh – green glutinous rice balls sprinkled with coconut shaving. What distinguish this snack from other sweets made of glutinous rice is core filled with brown, thick palm syrup. It gives ondeh ondeh very sweet and specific taste. This snack can be bought on a night market. It costs around 0.5 MYR.

Last thing you should try while visiting night market in Malaysia is Air Kelapa. It’s not a snack. It’s a drink made of coconut water and coconut shaving. It’s often served with a bit of syrup to make it sweeter. Its taste is very mild but it makes a wonderful and very refreshing drink on a hot day. It usually costs 1-2 MYR for a cup.

Enjoy!
